Toen hij [Abraham] opkeek, zag hij even verderop plotseling drie mannen staan. Onmiddellijk snelde hij de tent uit, naar hen toe. Hij boog diep en zei: 'Heer, wees toch zo goed uw dienaar niet voorbij te gaan. Ik zal wat water voor u laten halen zodat u uw voeten kunt wassen, maak het u hier onder de boom intussen gemakkelijk. Ik zal u ook iets te eten brengen, zodat u weer op krachten kunt komen voordat u verdergaat. Daarvoor bent u immers bij uw dienaar langsgekomen?' Zij antwoordden: 'Wij nemen uw uitnodiging graag aan.’ Gen. 18:2-5
De twee engelen kwamen 's avonds in Sodom aan. Lot zat juist in de stadspoort. Zodra hij hen zag stond hij op, ging hun tegemoet en boog zich diep voor hen neer. 'Heren,' zei hij, 'komt u toch mee. Het huis van uw dienaar staat voor u open; overnacht daar en was er uw voeten. Dan kunt u morgenvroeg uw weg vervolgen.' 'Nee, dank u,' antwoordden ze, 'we overnachten wel op het plein.' Omdat hij echter sterk bleef aandringen, gingen ze met hem mee naar zijn huis. Daar maakte hij een maaltijd voor hen klaar; hij bakte brood en ze aten bij hem. Gen. 19:1-3
Houd de onderlinge liefde in stand en houd de gastvrijheid in ere, want zo hebben sommigen zonder het te weten engelen ontvangen. Bekommer u om de gevangenen alsof u samen met hen gevangen zat, en om de mishandelden als om mensen die net zo'n lichaam hebben als u. Hebr. 13:1,2

When they see a stranger, they take him into their homes, and they rejoice over him as a very brother. For they do not call themselves brothers after the flesh, but brothers after the spirit and in God. Whenever one of the poor among them passes from this world, each one of them gives heed to him, according to his ability, and carefully sees to his burial. And if they hear that one of their number is imprisoned or afflicted because of the name of their Christ, all of them carefully attend to his needs. If it is possible to redeem him, they set him free. If there are any poor and needy among them, but if they have no spare food to give, they fast two or three days in order to supply the necessary food to the needy. They follow the commandments of their Christ with much care, living justly and seriously, just as the Lord their God commanded them. Every morning and every hour they give thanks and praise to God for His loving- kindnesses to them. They give thanksgiving to him for their food and drink. If any righteous man among them passes from this world, they rejoice and offer thanks to God. They escort his body as if he were setting out from one place to go to another nearby. On this account, too, according to age, we recognize some as sons and daughters. Others we regard as brothers and sisters. To the more advanced in life, we give the honor due to fathers and mothers. On behalf of those, then, to whom we apply the names of brothers and sisters, and other designations of relationship, we exercise the greatest care so that their bodies should remain undefiled and uncorrupted.
